I wasn’t the type you’d think would fall into a narcissist’s trap. Straight A’s all throughout elementary school and high school. First in my class at an elite prep school. Off-the-charts SAT scores. Early-decision acceptance (out of state) to University of Virginia.
Yet somehow I let this man convince me that I was stupid.
This man who barely graduated from high school. Who dropped out of a sub-par college. Who could barely construct a sentence. And could not spell to save his life.
How did it happen?
This kind of mental manipulation does not happen overnight. It’s a slow drip, as I’ve mentioned here, here and here.
It is so hard to pull yourself out from under a narcissist’s control. I know. I’ve been there. But if I could do it, then so can you.
The hardest part is recognizing that you are in his crazy web of deceit. That the person who you thought cared about you, loved you, maybe even worshiped you, is actually just messing with you.
It’s all about him. He will do and say anything to make himself feel superior. Your only worth to him is how you make him look or feel.
That’s a hard pill to swallow. But that’s what a narcissist does. And there is no drug, no therapy, nothing at all that can change him. Besides, he doesn’t want to change. He loves himself just the way he is. He thinks he’s perfect. It’s you (and the rest of the world) that needs changing.
What can you do? Get help.
Start talking. Tell people what’s going on. He won’t like it. There may be hell to pay. But hold your course. Expose his behavior. Don’t protect the villain. Get support. Find help. Call me if you need to.
We’ll get through this together.
