Divorce is (hopefully) the longest, most difficult journey of your life. It takes stamina to go the distance without running out of energy. Do you want to drag yourself through it on fumes? Then when something doesn’t go your way, you feel victimized and defeated and you just throw your hands up and surrender? Or do want to have the vitality and positivity to weather any storm along the way and come out a winner on the other side? I thought so. Then you need to be in the best possible shape.

I can hear you saying, “How can I possibly get myself in shape when I can barely drag myself out of bed?!” I know, I get it. Going through divorce is exhausting! But it is the most important thing to do if you’re headed for divorce. And even if you’re already deep into your divorce, it’s not too late. Divorce is a marathon, not a sprint. You still need to train.

To help you out, I’ve created this simple 3-step divorce-training bootcamp:

1. Eat a healthy diet.
This is more important than ever right now. You feel miserable. You’re stressed and anxious. You’re depressed. You’re scared. Eating poorly is only going to exacerbate those feelings. I know all you want to do is eat your favorite comfort foods and drink wine, but I promise, getting your diet on track will jumpstart your recovery and your success. It’s the first, small step to winning your divorce.

2. Exercise every day.
Okay, so I hear you saying, “Hold on. I didn’t ask for health advice. I need help with my divorce!” I can help you with the nitty-gritty of the divorce stuff, but first you have to take care of yourself. You know: put your own oxygen mask on first. Just 10 minutes of exercise a day will release endorphins and totally change your outlook. And I know you could use a new outlook, right?

3. Sleep 8 hours a night.

The #1 complaint I hear from most women who are going through divorce is that they can’t sleep. They’re exhausted, but the moment their head hits the pillow, all of their fears and regrets rear their ugly heads and keep them tossing and turning all night. Sound familiar? So how are you supposed to get 8 hours of sleep when you just toss and turn all night? Empty your brain. This takes some practice, but there are exercises you can do to help. Try some guided meditations on YouTube. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you fall asleep.

This also works during the day. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious, take a meditation break. Steal away for 10 minutes, close your eyes and empty your brain. When the thoughts show up, just acknowledge them, then send them on their way. Don’t hold on. It may seem difficult at first, but you will get the hang of it. You will feel as if you’ve had a nap — refreshed and ready to conquer the world.

Now you’ve got the steps you need; the trick is to do the work. That’s why I’m calling it divorce bootcamp: you have to commit to doing this every single day. That way you’ll be in divorce-winning shape and ready to tackle whatever comes at you.

It’s a long road, but we’ll get through this together.
